ChinesePod News - April 18, 2019

In the U.S., 555 new cases of measles have been reported for 2019. The Centers for Disease Control has linked the increase in national cases to the “anti-vaxer” movement. There has also been a sharp rise in the number of measles cases globally over the past two years.

近两年来,全球麻疹病例激增,

根据世界卫生组织统计,目前的重灾区包括乌克兰、马达加斯加、印度、巴基斯坦、菲律宾、也门和巴西等。

From January 1 to April 11, 2019, 555 new measles cases were reported in the United States. In all of 2018, only 372 cases were reported.

Globally, the number of measles cases has risen dramatically over the past two years.

According to the World Health Organization, the countries most affected include Ukraine, Madagascar, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Yemen, and Brazil.

Of every 1,000 children who catch measles, one will develop encephalitis or swelling of the brain.

The death rate from measles is one to two per 1,000 cases.

In the U.S., vaccination for measles became available in 1963. By 1994, only 963 cases were reported in the U.S.

In 2000, the U.S. declared that measles was no longer being continuously transmitted within the country.

The present increase in the incidence of measles has been attributed to the “anti-vaxer” movement.

As reported in CNN, Dr. William Schaffner of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases said, "We'd previously eliminated this disease not just in the U.S. but in the entire Western Hemisphere, and it appears that now we've profoundly and sadly turned back the clock."
