Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin, is reportedly considering bankruptcy protection to address liabilities faced in court.

Approximately 2,000 lawsuits have been filed against the company regarding its role in the opioid epidemic.

Plaintiffs claim that Purdue and its owner, the Sackler family, have flooded the market with highly addictive prescription drugs while leading deceptive advertising campaigns.

The latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that over 47,600 of overdose deaths in 2017 involved opioids.

Purdue alleges that the United States Food and Drug Administration approved their warning labels on opioid painkillers.

In June, the Massachusetts attorney general, Maura Healey, became the first plaintiff to sue both Purdue and the Sackler family.

Healey claimed that the family members reaped $4.2 billion as a result of misleading opioid marketing.

Purdue has asked a judge to dismiss the case.

If Purdue files for Chapter 11 protection under the United States Bankruptcy Code, these legal proceedings would halt, and the company would have an opportunity to further negotiate claims under the supervision of a US bankruptcy judge.
