A blackout is ongoing in some parts of Venezuela after 70% of the nation lost electricity on Thursday.

At a rally on Saturday, President Nicolas Maduro claimed that the US and Venezuela’s opposition were stifling attempts to restore the grid in an “electricity war.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo rejected Maduro’s claims of US meddling. Pompeo tweeted, “Power shortages and starvation are the result of the Maduro regime’s incompetence.”

Opposition leader Juan Guido addressed supporters in Caracas, encouraging them to demand regime change.

Under Article 187, Venezuela’s National Assembly can allow foreign military missions into the country.

The self-declared interim president cited potential activation of Article 187 of the Venezuelan Constitution.

Maduro countered that foreign military intervention would negatively affect both pro-government and pro-opposition groups.

With the increasing severity of the country’s economic crisis, blackouts often occur in Venezuela.

However, power loss of this scale is uncommon.

Without electricity, many hospitals have been unable to treat patients or to save medicines that require refrigeration.
