In Myanmar, two Reuters journalists, whose imprisonment sparked international outcry against the suppression of press freedom and democratic rights, were released by presidential pardon on Tuesday.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were arrested in 2017 while investigating the murder of 10 Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State.
Prosecutors alleged that the pair were spreading sensitive national-security-related information in violation of the Official Secrets Act.
The journalists claimed that government authorities framed them because authorities were upset by the men’s reporting.
The Myanmar military launched its offensive against Rohingya Muslims in August 2017 after Rohingya militants attacked police posts.
Over 720,000 Rohingyas have since had to flee to Bangladesh to escape the violence of the counterinsurgency, which has allegedly involved unchecked killing and rape, CNN reported.
U.N. officials, human rights advocates, and diplomats have condemned the Myanmar military’s brutal campaign against the Muslim minority group.
While in jail, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo received the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for their investigation into the killing of the Rohingya Muslims.
