The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) asked a judge to hold Tesla CEO Elon Musk in contempt for settlement violation.

He has defended himself on Twitter.

A previous tweet by Musk predicting Tesla’s 2019 production rate, had prompted the SEC’s legal decision.

The regulator argued that the tweet contained false information and defied the terms of social media regulations agreed upon between the SEC and Musk last year.

The terms were set following a tweet by Musk in August that he had secured funding to privatize Tesla.

The regulatory terms established subsequently were part of a greater settlement over the SEC’s claim that the tweet mislead investors and disrupted markets.

In the 2018 settlement, Musk agreed that before making statements on Tesla’s financial performance, he would seek company approval.

In an interview with CBS news, Musk stated that he had “no respect” for the SEC.

He also tweeted, “Something is broken with SEC oversight.”

A federal judge has set March 11 as Musk’s deadline to show cause as to why he should not be held in contempt.
