In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, alongside indications of Facebook's use in disinformation campaigns, Facebook's reputation has declined.

The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced on Wednesday that he would transform the site into a “privacy-focused platform” and steer it away from public broadcasting.

Zuckerberg outlined plans to offer more disappearing content and greater focus on small group chats.

Related changes may involve integrating users’ access to Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, messaging services all owned by Facebook.

Zuckerberg claimed the move would increase convenience and privacy.

He said, "I believe working towards implementing end-to-end encryption for all private communications is the right thing to do."

Critics have voiced concerns over the power this would give Facebook and whether users’ data would be shared among the historically separate messaging apps.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz tweeted that integrating the messaging services would be “Good for encryption but bad for competition and privacy.”
