July 28, 2015 at 5:43 AMThat's not a bad way to think about it. 'Ever' is not actually written in the sentence, but it could be implied. There is a common pattern in which 'ever' is in the sentence: SUBJECT 曾經 VERB 過 (OBJECT) 嗎？
- 你曾經去過大陸嗎？ Nǐ céngjīng qù-guò dàlù ma?
- 你曾經打過羽毛球嗎? Ni céngjīng dǎ-guò yúmáoqiú ma?
- 你曾經看過嗎? Ni céngjīng kàn-guò ma?
曾經 (céngjīng) means 'ever' in this context.

July 27, 2015 at 4:58 AM台灣有一個常看到的祖先崇拜習慣：在馬路上燒紙錢，祭祀祖先和鬼神。聽說因為環境污染且火災風險，很多地方不再這樣燒紙錢了，但是在台灣還是非常盛行，有時候霧霾濃到不能正常呼吸，真的是隨處可見。因為環保等因素，我個人不喜歡。

July 23, 2015 at 4:44 PMThis is pretty interesting because in the 廣韻 the 反切 spelling of 寂 is 前歷切, which would mean its tone in the traditional reading framework, that is the prescribed readings of the GuangYun, is Mandarin's second tone now. The forth tone version could be a colloquial variant. It would make sense, then, if teachers are teaching the second tone version in Taiwan, where "proper" readings come straight from the GuangYun tradition, while in China a colloquial variant took the role as the standard. (In China, not all standard readings are from GuangYun linage.)

July 23, 2015 at 3:55 PMIn China, I believe 寂 in 寂寞, 孤寂 and 寂靜 is said with the forth tone. I'm pretty sure about this, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I know that in Taiwan it's always said with the second tone. Textbooks in the US probably teach it with the forth tone. I know my book did. I'm not sure about textbooks in other countries.

July 23, 2015 at 3:20 PMThe pinyin for 黃 {huáng} in 命喪黃泉 {mìng sàng huángquán} is wrong. The last consonant is {-ng) not {-n}. Please fix this when you can :)
