谢谢lily! As a child I thought I was pretty special to share that birthday. The truth of the matter is, a Christmas birthday ends up being of low importance and is not a blessing. My pastor years ago did explain that we can figure out Jesus' real birthday by going back to astronomy records, and even though it wasn't on Dec 25, that date was chosen to fit the church's calendar. No matter.

changye, sadly, no. And the tradition stands to this day. One "Christmas Birthday" present only. Christmas is not a good time to have a birthday, take it from a pro!

weibwo, my trick for turkey is to soak it in a brine for 24 or more hours. Then, roast it breast side down. Last half hour, turn it over to brown on high heat. I have heard though that the deep-fry method is very good!

对不起,我还不能用中文。duìbùqǐ, wǒ hái bù néng yòng zhōng wén. Sorry I still don't feel confident using Chinese.

圣诞节是我的生日。我做一个很大火鸡。

shèngdànjié shì wǒ de shēngrì. wǒ zuò yī ge hěn dà huǒji.

I'm cooking a big dinner for my family, some Korean and Chinese friends. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry, etc. The turkey weighs 21 pounds.

Merry Christmas everybody!

hughborg, I'll say it: Rosetta Stone!!!  I had a free copy so tried it a bit. For some reason I could not see purchasing it as my learning style did not mesh with RS. With CP I do most of my study/learning after I have downloaded the lesson material then re-format it all to suit me. Larger text, flashcards, slowing down the audio files so my dull braiin can hear them better, etc.

to your point, though, when I heard that "yīge nǚ ér" in this lesson, I too, in my memory, heard the echo of that RS segment. Those moments when you realize you understood without conscious translating, precious!

John et. al. you are too funny for early morning!

On a more serious note, would anyone be able to share some simple sentences about [my] nails? Unfortunately:

I bite my nails.

My hands are ugly, they embarrass me.

I do not like to go to get a manicure because the people working there speak Korean amongst themselves and I feel they are talking badly about me. I don't speak Korean.

OK, that last one is pretty complicated. Maybe too much for my level.

I wish I had John's hands. 泰漂亮了!

lujiaojie, thank you for your answer! I was not aware of that pattern. I do love the patterns I learn in Chinese. It makes it all a bit easier.

Huge thanks!

In the states, an "air conditioner" ONLY cools. I had to do a little mind bending in the "The North Has Central Heating" lesson to accept the heating/cooling properties of the kōngtiáo 空调。In the early 1960's most homes did not have air conditioning (cooling). At least for my social status, in my childhood years it was something associated with the wealthy.

Then, came "central air conditioning." This was a unit installed alongside, but separate from our home's "central heat" and still ONLY cooled the air.

Now, in our current home for example, we talk about the "central air" and of course it heats or cools with a flip of the thermostat's switch.

But, as a child and still in my adult life here in the states, "air conditioner" only means a cooling machine.

John I also have to say that your explanations are so clear and concise. Easy to understand. Other than learning a few new vocabulary words and learning to write them, I feel as though I have mastered this lesson without really putting in much study, because you have so clearly presented the material.

Hi guys. The html version of the simplified pdf does not have the vocabulary list. Do you think you'd be able to fix that? Thanks.
