Thank you for providing the pinyin chart for download. Awesome to be able to listen to those combinations any time. Like xiaophil, I hope to end the frustration of differentiating sounds like quan/chuan, shi/xi, etc.

The QW of my dreams is to have a complete list of words and phrases with characters, pinyin, and translation, (rjberki rocks!) and perhaps a few notes.

I copy all of the useful discussion comments and make a Word file, editing and adding to it as I listen to the lesson, so thank you CP members for your helpful comments. I just want to express my appreciation of the QW lessons and the members' comments. There are most likely other lurkers out there like myself, not knowledgeable enough to contribute, doing the same thing.

I too very much appreciate this lesson. I am forever straining my ears in Chinese class, trying to hear those little phrases the teacher uses, like "go to page..." "next paragraph..." and whatnot. I want to learn it ALL. Of course that is not realistic, but this lesson is like a hand up to the next dry rock in crossing the stream.

I almost hate to comment on this lesson because I don't want to re-open the can of worms.

As a newbie/beginner I found this helpful:

对不起 Ask: "Is this my fault?" -- new to me, and very helpful. I've been mis-using it.

One thing I learned from a Chinese friend while dining, is that instead of saying xie xie when the waiter brings food or refills, just tap on the table and that fulfulls polite recognition. You don't even have to look at the waiter. This is to not interrupt your conversation with your fellow diners, yet still allows you to show appreciation to the waiter.

My Chinese friend also told me that thanking someone in certain situations can send a negative signal. If you consider them a close friend or family member, you should not thank them. It's known that you are thankful to them and it does not need to be expressed. In other words, she said that thanking someone means that they are a bit removed from your close circle, so you are making their position to you clear. It's not an insult, but it is not positive, either. You feel it necessary to thank them, so they must not be very close to you.

She is a "northerner" if that matters.

I don't understand much of the chatter in Chinese in this lesson, or any lesson for that matter. I always want the basic phrases in written form, which I haven't found here but may have missed it because i haven't read every comment. If QW's are directed toward Ellies, then I must be a very low level Newbie. Oh well!  哎

我常常用华盛顿的地铁。

Wǒ chángchang yòng huàshèngdùn de dìtiě.

I often use the Washington metro.

Anyone know - do I have to use zuo4, or is yong4 OK?

As tempted as I am to steal menus (I am only in the states, though) I always ask if I can have one, or purchase one. If they say no, then I ask if I can photocopy one for my Chinese study. Honestly, for me, a stolen menu would mean bad, bad karma!

I laughed at the video because I too have tried to take pictures of menus and my results thwarted by the flash. All too funny and too true! Great lesson, I am going to follow this series and learn the vocabulary.

If you do a pdf file, would you please make the plain text linked to it? Some of the pdf's don't seem to have the plain text and it is troublesome to copy, paste, write Pinyin, etc., for my flashcards. For me, at least, the pdf files are not useful. It's the plain text that saves me time. I enlarge everything to the maximum for easier viewing on my flashcards, so need a text file.

Pete, I've been meaning to write you a proper thank you note for these poems. I'd never have appreciated their beauty without your making them available in this way.
