April 7, 2008 at 3:35 AMwjefferys From what I understand Chinese language etiquette is a vast sea, especially since it usually goes along with certain actions. However as for phone greetings I find Chinese people usually expect the caller to identify themselves. Even many business here just answer the phone ”喂“。 I know that when I get a random Chinese caller to my cell phone I usually say something along these lines. "喂,你好” Wei, hello Ni3 Hao3 “你是哪位?” Who are you? (You are which one?)Ni3 shi4 Na3 Wei4 I don't take offense when people ask "who are you" and "what do you want" when on the phone. It's just how it works over here. -许尘

April 7, 2008 at 3:21 AMI do agree with you that vocab and sentences should be provided to break away certain sterotypes and ideas. However at this level is it not easy enough to simply negate what they said. “虽然底特律有好多的问题,然而它还是一个很有意思的地方“ I think John & Jenny's intent is to get you into the conversation, after that it is your job to manage the content. Just my Two cents. -许尘

March 27, 2008 at 9:57 AMWhat is the art gallery scam? Did I miss something?... Sorry my pot cast cuts out at the end. Also, they say : 我不懂艺术 (wo3 bu4 dong3 yi4shu4) Could you also say: 艺术,我都看不出来 (yi4shu4, wo3dou1kan4bu4chu1lai2) I always though that was more of a "I don't know what to make of what I'm seeing" kind of phrase. Anyone? -许尘
