September 26, 2011 at 9:58 PMThe phrase I hear most from my teacher is 把这个“的”取掉 aka "delete that 的!" (always the 白勺 kind). Here is a sentence, maybe you can comment:
I feel confident about deleting the 的 in the spot marked with × , not sure about the ones following.
(PS: this is inspired by Greg saying: "this is mine, this is yours", my translation from Sanskrit meaning roughly "this is mine, and that is others', is a mean-spirited person's outlook: those of a broad-minded and charitable disposition treat everyone as a family member.")

September 20, 2011 at 8:08 AM谢谢您!

September 19, 2011 at 9:48 PM1.

September 14, 2011 at 9:14 AM"The same boat with the same weight on it would have the same floating line"
I'd argue this is intuitive (anybody observing a boat loading will notice that a heavier boat is deeper in the water, and it's not far-fetched to extrapolate that equally loaded boats sit equally deep). This can be deduced of course from Archimedes' principle, but Archimedes' principle is more general and until you do the maths, is counter-intuitive. The wikipedia page above notes that even Galileo thought that Archimedes' "golden crown scale" was remarkably accurate.
The Baidu story translates flotation line as 水面的地方.

September 13, 2011 at 5:19 PMJenny, that would be great. I have to say that I shamelessly exploited the bug while it was there (one consequence: one of my alarm sounds is 劳动最光荣). However, I have to say that not having the dialogue transcript and vocab on the Android app is a real downer -- I find the text commentary sometimes too small to read on my Nano. If Cpod isn't mobile then what's the fun?

September 13, 2011 at 5:08 PMGood q, let me add to Jenny's two examples I found from 句酷, not 100% sure they are all examples of this particular complement though.
Surprisingly, given the meaning of 通 many of them seem to have "get through" type idiomatic translations in English: I just can't get it through my head why you let that child go on vacation alone; I can't get through (on the phone); reason doesn't get through to him etc.

September 13, 2011 at 4:40 PMNot sure what the Golden Crown has to do with measuring weight -- isn't it more about density? I'd argue that what Cao Chong did is pretty unconnected with Archimedes's principle.
