(I can't believe Jenny and Connie missed this, especially after talking about foundation and skin and all) and of course 深圳 ;-)

August 27, 2011 at 11:25 AMI found this lesson a little less precise than other Qing Wens. Maybe it's a matter of taste, but would you really say:
我对Connie有很深的了解很
means “I have a deep understanding of Connie"? It's really rare that you put a person at the end of "deep understanding" - you could say you have a deep understanding of Connie's mindset/moods.
Also if you say If you translate it as "foundations are solid" then this does not equal "skilled". For example, I would say that a student who did well at high school has a solid foundation for their University studies, but is not skilled (yet).
Also let's not forget that qiǎn 浅 can be used to express "deep" as in 收获匪浅. :-)

August 25, 2011 at 11:28 AMSo I am right in the middle of looking at directional complements, and here is what my book says about 下去.
Commonly used verbs in this context: 说、讲、学、读、传、坚持……
Which doesn't answer your question. 跑下来 is used but it means something different:
动作从过去持续到现在。
Example: 听到他太太出事了,他一直从办公室到医院跑下来了。
(That's my example, not the book's, caveat emptor etc.)

August 28, 2011 at 10:14 AMThanks, Jenny! That's exactly what I thought, and if so, skilled is as good a translation as any. However, when I looked at JuKuu I saw this example which seemed to cut both ways.
